Membership

Library and information services are found everywhere - in business, commerce and industry, further and higher education, schools, local and central government departments and agencies, the health service, the voluntary sector, national and public libraries. The library and information profession encompasses those working in e-publishing, knowledge management, online services, Web development and research, as well as the more traditionally delivered services.

Since 1877 (the Library Association) and 1958 (the Institute of Information Scientists) we have worked to support and promote the role of libraries and information and to provide a strong voice speaking out on behalf of information workers.

Top Ten reasons for becoming a CILIP Member:

  1. A professional body with an extensive Membership base able to promote and enhance the value of its Members and the profession.
  2. An authoritative voice for the library and information profession, working with key partners to lobby and influence policy makers and employers.
  3. A focus for continuing personal professional development through Branches and Groups and a wide range of courses and events.
  4. A framework of qualifications of national and international standing.
  5. Current awareness of key issues and best practice through the Website, the monthly magazine, a range of publications and the Members' Information Service.
  6. Professional advice from experts in your field.
  7. Access to current employment opportunities through the fortnightly Appointments bulletin and the in-house recruitment agency.
  8. Casework on your behalf, working with employers and other agencies to safeguard your interests and improve your status.
  9. A nationwide network of contacts; and a key player in the international arena.
  10. Your opportunity to be part of your wider professional community.

Subscriptions and benefits - driven by Members

It is the Members who run CILIP, on Members' behalf. Subscription levels - based on income and regularly reviewed - are approved by you, the Members, at CILIP's AGM. During the transitional period from 2002 to 2004, subscriptions of the two predecessor bodies will be brought into line in a staged process, overseen by CILIP's elected Council. Subscriptions are an essential part of CILIP's income, enabling it to provide the comprehensive range of services that the Members of a Chartered Institute incorporated under the auspices of the Privy Council expect. But subscriptions provide only about 40% of CILIP's income; revenue from CILIP Enterprises, together with some rental and investment returns, make up the bulk of CILIP's income.

In return, the benefits for CILIP Members are extensive. Whatever type of library or information service you work in, CILIP has a full range of services to help you. Your subscription provides far more than buildings and staff; CILIP offers advice on careers, employment and professional issues, supports you through lobbying and advocacy, awards qualifications to help you shape your future, provides unbeatable networking opportunities, and gives special Member discounts on its full range of 'commercial' products and services.

Expanding the Membership - CILIP's goal for the future

CILIP is the professional Membership body of choice for around 23,000 Members, at all stages of their career development. Nevertheless, there are many more people who could benefit from Membership of CILIP - people already working in libraries and information units, or with advice and guidance services, in records management or learning support, as knowledge managers, researchers or consultants. CILIP is open to anyone who uses library and information skills in the course of their work. Its aim is to create an inclusive profession, based on common skills and competencies, irrespective of where people work.

A growing Membership allows CILIP to speak with an even more powerful voice on the profession's behalf, to offer an even wider range of services and facilities, and to keep subscriptions within bounds. CILIP is committed to growing its Membership for the benefit of all its Members and stakeholders.
