The newest game in the Pokémon franchise is Pokémon Duel, out now for iOS and Android. Don’t expect the free download, which has in-app purchases, to be anything like Pokémon Go or even mobile puzzle game Pokémon Shuffle, however. Duel is instead a pretty unique strategy game starring a variety of Pokémon characters.
Released last year in Japan under the name Pokémon Co-master, Pokémon Duel is inspired by board games. Players construct decks of up to six Pokémon figurines, which can then be used in a race against an opponent. The goal is to get a Pokémon into the opponent’s side of the board, and each player takes a turn to try to advance their team while preventing their rival from doing the same.

The best watch for the iPhone isn’t made by Apple. It’s a Samsung creation.
I was already a big fan of the Gear S3 Frontier when it came out late last year, but Samsung’s decision to add robust iOS support to its latest smartwatch has pushed my enthusiasm for the device over the top — and the Apple Watch from my wrist.
The Gear S3 comes in two designs, classic and Frontier. The Frontier is one of those chunky watches, like something you might wear while hiking or going for a run. It’s slightly thick for a regular watch, but considering the fact that it can also function as a stand-alone phone, I’m willing to overlook the additional bulk. Besides, that never really bothered me.

Super Mario Run will finally be released on Android in March, Nintendo announced today.
The news came in a tweet from Nintendo of Japan:

Super Mario Run, Nintendo’s first game for mobile devices, launched Dec. 15 on iOS after debuting at an Apple event in September. Nintendo launched a promotion for Fire Emblem Heroes, the series’ first mobile-exclusive entry, allowing fans to vote to get certain characters in the game. The “Choose Your Heroes” campaign is running now, and it has extra rewards for Nintendo Account holders.
Visiting the campaign page, players are given the option to link their Nintendo Accounts. Doing so will earn them 200 Platinum points, which can be used to redeem gifts and discounts from My Nintendo.
Visitors won’t just get points for linking their account, however. They’ll be rewarded the My Nintendo points after casting their first vote for one of a plethora of classic Fire Emblem heroes, spanning the entire franchise. Nintendo will bring Fire Emblem Heroes, a brand-new story in the tactical role-playing game franchise, to smart devices, the company announced during a Nintendo Direct livestream presentation today.
The game will come to Google Play and the Apple App Store on Feb. 2 as a free download.
As a summoner, players will “call upon Fire Emblem heroes throughout history,” including characters from Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates, in turn-based battles. Those battles will take place on an 8x6 grid designed to fit on smartphones, Nintendo said, and feature the same weapon triangle system from the Fire Emblem franchise. Players will be able to upgrade their heroes and can even summon additional heroes to supplement their army.

Dataminers have pored through the files for Pokémon Go’s latest version update, and they’ve found numerous signs of even bigger updates to come. Pokémon Go research community The Silph Road catalogued the code found in the game, which suggests that several more second-generation Pokémon are heading to the mobile hit.
Found in the game’s latest update are evolutionary items. There are five items that appear by name in the datamined game code, which will be familiar to longtime fans of the handheld Pokémon adventures. There’s the Sun Stone, King’s Rock, Metal Coat, Dragon Scale and Upgrade items, each of which debuted in Pokémon Gold and Silver back on the Game Boy Color.

Nintendo’s next Nintendo Direct presentation will focus on the Fire Emblem series, the company confirmed today.
The livestream will begin at 5 p.m. ET tomorrow, Jan. 18. Nintendo has not yet announced how long the presentation will run.
During last week’s hourlong presentation about the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo announced a new Fire Emblem spinoff that is in development for the upcoming console: Fire Emblem Warriors. Like the 2014 Zelda title Hyrule Warriors, it is a crossover with Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors series. Nintendo said it would offer further details about Fire Emblem Warriors during tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct.

Respawn has canceled its Titanfall spin-off mobile card game, which is currently in closed beta.
Titanfall: Frontline cast the player as a commander, like Sarah in the original Titanfall, who is responsible for putting together a team of titans and pilots. It offered turn-based combat in player-versus-player battles.
Back in 2015, Titanfall developer Respawn announced a "multi-game, multi-year" deal with Nexon to bring Titanfall games to mobile. Frontline was announced in 2016. But according to a Facebook update posted yesterday, the game was not up to scratch.

Blizzard Entertainment’s digital card game Hearthstone has been an absurdly popular hit — to the tune of over 50 million players as of last April. While this player-friendly title has served as a perfect introduction to card games for many players (including myself), others who have been playing collectible card games for years have wondered: Why didn’t Magic: The Gathering ever get a truly great digital experience?
If publisher Wizards of the Coast is to be believed, that could finally change in the near future. The original six NES Mega Man games have been released on iOS and Android devices, and you’re better off not buying them. We’re very sorry to be a bummer about this, but it’s best you hear it from a friend.
“These lovingly-crafted adaptations will remind long-time fans and introduce newcomers to what made the Blue Bomber such a popular and iconic character,” Capcom’s Mega Man Mobile press release states. “Each game has been optimized for the mobile devices with adjustments to game speed. Each game will be available separately for $1.99.”
The idea that the games have had their speed “adjusted” is somewhat misleading, as the reality is that the framerate on these new releases is abysmal. The games themselves have also been edited a bit from the originals.

Pop star Ariana Grande will make a guest appearance in Square Enix’s free-to-play Final Fantasy mobile game, Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, the singer announced on her Instagram account today.
It’s not clear when Grande will make her guest appearance in the Final Fantasy game or how players will be able to recruit her. We’ve reached out to Square Enix for details.
Grande’s appearance in Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius is based on her latex rabbit eared look as seen on her latest album, Dangerous Woman, and in the video for the album’s title track. Grande shared “a little peek” at her character’s sprite in motion on Instagram.

More than five million Gear VR headsets are in consumers hands globally, Samsung announced during a CES press conference today.
Samsung did not release any app sales figures, but did say that in total, those users have watched more than 10 million hours of video in Gear VR, the Oculus-powered Samsung phone VR headset. Samsung VR is one of the top applications on Gear VR currently and it houses more than 1,200 360 videos for the headsets, according to the company.
The mobile headset is currently available at 20,000 retail stores across the U.S., the company added.
Samsung did not release any app sales figures.
Gear VR is a critical element to virtual reality’s success, according to the company, which spoke to Polygon late last year for a story about mobile VR.

Iranian government censors have placed a nationwide block on Clash of Clans, citing concerns that the game promotes tribal conflict.
The mobile strategy game is hugely popular in Iran, with local distributor Cafe Bazaar claiming a 64 percent market share, based on a survey of 1,000 gamers. In Clash of Clans, players build towns by taking resources from other players, often joining large guilds to facilitate victory and share spoils.
According to the BBC, Iranian censors followed the findings of a panel of psychologists that the game encourages violence and tribal conflict. Super Mario Run is out now in hundreds of countries on iOS devices, which must be very nice for people with iPhones and iPads. Only own an Android phone? You’re out of luck: Nintendo hasn’t said when the game will be out on Android beyond sometime in 2017.
We’ve reached out to Nintendo to be just a little more specific about the Android launch window, to which a representative simply told Polygon that “information about that version will be revealed in the future.”
Since Super Mario Run made its global debut during a fall Apple event, it’s not surprising that the tech supergiant gets first dibs. Veteran designer Shigeru Miyamoto recently explained in an interview with Mashable that security was a big reason for the early Apple exclusivity.

Super Mario Run on Android still has no date beyond 2017, but today a placeholder for the game popped up in the Google Play store along with a detailed description and ability to pre-register.
By clicking on the register button, hopeful players will be notified when the game goes live. The game’s release date is simply listed as “coming soon.” Nintendo did the same thing for the iOS version of its game, which finally released on Dec. 15.
The game has players controlling an ever-running Mario as he makes his way, mostly from left to right, through worlds decorated with breakable blocks, pipes and the many other familiar hallmarks of a Super Mario game.

A special seasonal event starts in Pokémon Go on Dec. 25, encouraging players to celebrate the holidays by playing the mobile game. As part of developer Niantic’s gift to players, there will be increased chances to catch some of the most beloved Pokémon until the event’s end.
From Dec. 25 until sometime in the afternoon on Jan. 3, players can grab one Incubator per day. These will be doled out at PokéStops and are single use-only. Visiting PokéStops will also give players a better chance of collecting eggs that house the new baby Pokémon, like Togepi and Pichu. They’re among the first second-gen monsters to make it into the game, after first appearing earlier this month.

Super Mario Run is filled with money, but the pink, purple and black coins scattered throughout every level in World Tour are the most difficult to get. Collecting them rewards you with rally tickets for the competitive Toad Rally mode — and accounts for much of the Nintendo game’s replay value.
Collecting special coins works the same way in every board from 1-1 to 6-4. First you collect the pink coins, which unlocks the more difficult purple coins, which unlocks the most difficult black coins. RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic, a blend of the classic Windows PC game and its sequel, is now available for $5.99 on Android and iOS, publisher Atari announced today.
The game isn’t a bundle of those two games; it’s one product that combines features from 1999’s RollerCoaster Tycoon and 2002’s RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. That means you can play scenarios from the original game with improvements from the sequel, such as the ability to place rides and other attractions at heights above and below ground.
Chris Sawyer — the original developer of both games — served as a producer on RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic, which was made by London-based Origin8 Technologies.

The first six entries in the Mega Man franchise — that’s all of the 8-bit titles in the original series — will be released on Android and iOS in early January, publisher Capcom announced today.
Here’s the full list of games, for the uninitiated: Mega Man (1987), Mega Man 2 (1988), Mega Man 3 (1990), Mega Man 4 (1991), Mega Man 5 (1992) and Mega Man 6 (1993). All of them debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Capcom will sell each of the mobile ports for $1.99 on the App Store and Google Play, with the word “Mobile” appended to the titles. A Capcom Mobile representative told Polygon that the purchase price will cover each entire game; the titles will not offer microtransactions.

As we near 2016’s end, Pokémon Go developer Niantic is reflecting on just how far the game has come since its July launch — and how far its players have traveled. To collect some of the game’s most astounding data points, Niantic made the video above, showing off some wild stats from the past five months.
Chief among those wild Pokémon Go numbers is just how many kilometers players have walked while playing the game. As of Dec. 7, Niantic says that they’ve traveled 8.7 billion kilometers just by walking outside in the search for new Pokémon to catch. The developer put this another way, to convey just how far that is: That distance is comparable to more than 200,000 trips around the Earth.
