Resident Evil 7 is making people sick, even without VR

Resident Evil 7 biohazard is one of the year’s first must-play games. The problem is that the first chapter left me in a sweaty, queasy state of panic. The reason for that wasn’t Resident Evil 7’s copious scares, blood and gore. I’m no chicken; I can handle myself with a horror game just fine. Resident Evil 7 made me feel physically ill due to a strong case of motion sickness. This wasn’t the PlayStation VR version, either, which is known to be more than a bit nauseating. This was the standard Resident Evil 7, played on a screen. The game’s constant camera movement and tiny field of view gave me an unbearable case of the shakes. I’ve rarely experienced such a palpably uncomfortable sensation while gaming, but the few occasions that I have been overcome with seasickness were caused by...

Prey launching in early May, watch the new trailer

Prey, Arkane Studios’ reboot of the first-person shooter series, will be released May 5 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One, publisher Bethesda Softworks announced today. Bethesda also released the second gameplay trailer for Prey today, showing off more of the space station Talos I and the story in the game. We learn that Morgan Yu, the protagonist of Prey — who can be male or female, depending on the player’s choice — is the vice president and director of research for the TranStar Corporation. It appears that Yu has been studying alien life forms known as Typhon onboard Talos I and doing research into “neuromods.” These mods, which are based on the Typhon creatures, confer alien powers to humans ... by being injected into an eye socket. This action takes place indoors, but...

Overwatch’s Year of the Rooster event introduced a weird bug: skinny Mei

Overwatch’s Year of the Rooster event went live on Tuesday, bringing with it a new capture the flag gameplay mode and a bunch of new skins and other cosmetics themed around the Chinese New Year. It also introduced its share of minor bugs, including one that puzzled players: an unusually skinny Mei. Mei’s new Lunar New Year skins — Luna and Chang’e — appeared to give her a much thinner, unnatural-looking waist, Overwatch players noticed shortly after the update went live. Compare Mei’s (contentious) Christmas-themed outfit to her new Year of the Rooster skins: In profile, Mei’s tinier waist looked even more unusual, if not straight-up broken. Blizzard says that slimmed-down Mei is a glitch, and it will require a patch to remedy. “There's...

Overwatch’s capture the flag mode took years to figure out, but it may be here to stay

Overwatch’s Chinese New Year event adds more than just festive skins to the game. It adds a new game mode, called “Capture the Rooster,” a holiday-themed take on the classic playground game capture the flag. The popular game type’s inclusion may come as a surprise to longtime Overwatch fans, who recall Blizzard Entertainment’s repeated comments about how capture the flag just wouldn’t work for the hero shooter. “Over the years, when we were iterating and testing various versions of capture the flag, we actually gave up on the mode for awhile,” director Jeff Kaplan explained in his latest “Developer Update” video, above. “We felt like what we didn’t want to do was add a bunch of rules that no longer made Overwatch heroes feel like Overwatch heroes.” The problem that Blizzard frequently...

Musou Stars’ gameplay videos are super effing weird

There's probably a reason Musou Stars, the next game out of Koei Tecmo's Warriors series, doesn't yet have a launch date in the west, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I mean, cats. We have cats here, too, right? Who doesn't get cats? And gambling! C'mon, Americans loooove to gamble. Three sevens on a slot machine is jackpot, that's kind of a universal language. OK, alright, I will say I was a little flummoxed by the choo-choo train that sucks up people and ejects them from its smokestacks. But again, as a citizen of the country that invented Amtrak, I know a train is capable of wrecking shit, so I interpreted its combat prowess contextually. In all seriousness, these are three combat gameplay shorts for Musou Stars featuring (in order) Nobu Oda from Samurai Cats, a 2011,...

Spiritual successor to Descent, Sublevel Zero, is headed to PS4 and Xbox One

Sublevel Zero Redux, a game inspired by the 1996 classic Descent, is coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Developer SigTrap says that it’s the first time that a six-degrees-of-freedom shooter will be available on a console in over a decade. Sublevel Zero is a roguelike game that puts players in the role of a lonely scavenger inside a gunship. Players are able to fly that ship like a spaceplane, but also hover and strafe to the sides and up and down. It creates a tense atmosphere, where every move is fraught with peril. Every session is different, thanks to procedurally generated levels and random loot drops. There’s also a crafting system for making new items on the fly. SigTrap Games Developer SigTrap Games said in a press...

It goes without saying, but this post contains major spoilers for Resident Evil 7. If you’re planning to play the game and don’t want plot elements ruined for you, please do not read any further. Overwatch’s Chinese New Year event is live

Blizzard Entertainment’s newest seasonal event for Overwatch, Year of the Rooster, is now live, bringing a new batch of cosmetic items and a new gameplay mode, Capture the Rooster, to the game. Overwatch’s take on capture the flag takes place on Lijiang Tower. Players must secure the enemy flag while the opposing team tries to do the same. “In this fast-paced brawl, players will need to get creative with their team compositions as they attempt construct a lineup that’s simultaneously built for offensive speed and defensive stability,” Blizzard said of the limited-time game mode. Resident Evil 7’s first DLC adds new mode next week

Resident Evil 7 biohazard is now available, and Capcom celebrated the hotly anticipated horror game’s launch by announcing details about its upcoming downloadable content. Two packs of DLC will arrive beginning Jan. 31, and they’ll add new modes to play, as well as some new — and terrifying — playable episodes. Banned Footage Vol. 1 will hit PlayStation 4 first on Jan. 31, according to the Capcom Unity blog; it will then come to Windows PC and Xbox One on Feb. 21. Included in the $9.99 set are two new pieces of videotape, which contain scenes that players actually interact with throughout Resident Evil 7, not just watch. These are “Bedroom” and “Nightmare,” which players should expect to be pretty dang horrifying. Also scary: a mode called “Ethan Must Die,” which is not compatible with...

Overwatch Chinese New Year event skins, details leak out early (update)

A trailer for Overwatch’s next seasonal event based on the upcoming Chinese New Year, has made its way online. A member of the Chinese social network Weibo uploaded a low-res version of a teaser for the Year of the Rooster promotion, which is set for Jan. 24. The trailer, which is an advertisement for the Chinese market, is grainy, but it gives fans a quick look at costumes for a variety of heroes. Symmetra is decked out in a red-and-gold dress, appropriate for the holiday. Roadhog, Reinhardt, Winston and Zenyatta resemble characters from the classic Chinese story Journey to the West, which boasts a cast full of animals that are also featured in the Zodiac. The quartet’s skins are seen more clearly in another ad that made it online ahead of the trailer. A poster showing the four in...

What does the Dirty Coin do in Resident Evil 7?

Ever since Resident Evil 7’s initial demo was released last summer, fans were obsessed with a bizarre puzzle that seemed to have no solution. Then, after a final update to the demo in December, players finally cracked the code. The reward for all of this trouble? An item called the Dirty Coin that players could take with them into the release version of Resident Evil 7. Since then, fans have spent the last month speculating on what the Dirty Coin will accomplish in the full game. Now that we’ve played it, we can give you the big reveal, and it’s ... kind of disappointing, actually. Throughout the course of Resident Evil 7, you can pick up special collectibles called Ancient Coins. At a few points throughout the game, you’ll encounter locked bird cages that can be opened by placing a set...

Resident Evil 7 review

With Resident Evil 7, Capcom has proved me wrong about the Resident Evil franchise. Resident Evil 6 was a game wildly out of touch with its own fanbase; this beloved horror series has struggled for relevance since. It's had a couple of solid HD remasters, and the Revelations spinoff series has stayed strong, but the disaster of the last mainline entry in the franchise has lingered. It got so bad for me, a Resident Evil fan since 1998's Resident Evil 2, that I essentially admitted defeat. In my review of 2015's episodic Resident Evil Revelations 2, I said that the game "provides a road map for where to take [the series] next" — but this felt like a concession, rather than anything truly revelatory. It wasn't ambitious or particularly scary, but at least it wasn't bad. Damningly, this...

Dark Souls 3’s final DLC stops by The Ringed City this March

The last expansion for Dark Souls 3, The Ringed City, will launch on March 28. Bandai Namco Entertainment revealed the release date alongside a trailer for the downloadable content, showing off what awaits players in the apocalyptic cityscape at the world’s end. The DLC is coming to PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One, and will cost $14.99. Owners of the $24.99 season pass will receive the expansion — the game’s second after last fall’s Ashes of Ariandel — when it launches. The Ringed City will introduce new characters to the game as players traverse the world of Dark Souls 3 in pursuit of the Slave Knight Gael. There will also be new armor, weapons and magic to check out along the way to and within the hellish Ringed City. Although we weren’t as enamored of Dark Souls 3 as we were...

Not fighting is a viable and extremely fun path in InXile’s new game

Torment: Tides of Numenera may be the best RPG ever about avoiding conflict

I love role-playing games more than any other genre, but as someone who’s been playing them my whole life, it’s pretty easy to predict how situations are going to play out sometimes. For example, when my party comes across a scene of some members of the city guard verbally sparring with a group of mutant ruffians in a bad part of town, there’s only one way this is going down. If it’s a certain kind of RPG, maybe I can choose between the mutants or the guards, but at least one of these groups is getting taken out. Sure enough, when this exact situation happens during my demo playthrough of an area deep into the campaign of InXile’s upcoming RPG Torment: Tides of Numenera, I quickly realize that I can make a choice which group to side with and which to fight. But Torment also offers an...

The Division's major new update detailed

Alongside the release of its third paid expansion, Last Stand, Ubisoft is also rolling out Update 1.6 to all players of its shooting game The Division. So what's new? In a blog post this week, Ubi outlined the changes, which the company says are some of the most significant it's brought to the apocalyptic game since its launch in March last year. Most important is the opening of a new area in the northern parts of the PvP and PvE Dark Zone where Dark Zone 7, 8 and 9 will now be available. Ubi describes the situations in these areas as "especially dire" with "a couple of surprises." The company says these new spaces — including vertical and underground arenas — almost double the total size of the current Dark Zone. Players will now be able to insta-travel around the map. Clearing...

Nostalgic shooter Strafe gets a March release date

Tongue-in-cheek throwback shooter Strafe is arriving on March 28 on PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, according to publisher Devolver Digital. The game first garnered attention following the release of an absurdly '90s trailer back in 2015. Further examination revealed an unabashedly straightforward shooting game, that's right out of 1998. The game is being developed by indie team Pixel Titans. "We’re seeing a generational shift of nostalgia from side-scrolling pixel art to primitive 3D," said developer Thom Glunt in a 2015 interview with Polygon. "We aimed for that 20-year-old aesthetic because I absolutely loved Quake and I loved Doom and I wanted more of it."
