This Woman Missed Graduation to Give Birth, So the College Brought Graduation to Her

Baby Milo arrived two weeks early

Juliet Smith was set to graduate from Guilford College this past Saturday when she got a bit of a surprise the night before: she went into labor.

Smith was out to dinner with her family Friday night, all set to arrive at her commencement at 7:30 the following morning when her water broke, ABC News reports. A few minutes before midnight, she gave birth to her son, Milo, two weeks before her June 9 due date.

Smith was obviously overjoyed about her new son, but was also quite disappointed about missing graduation after working so hard to earn her degree.

“I was so mad at him,” Smith said in a release. “And then I was upset with myself, because I didn’t want my first feeling toward my first son to be anger, but I’d been so excited to be a part of commencement for so long.”

Shortly after the official commencement, a group of teachers, deans and other faculty members arrived at the hospital to conduct a special ceremony for Smith. One professor even brought a tuba and played “Pomp and Circumstance.” He also played “Happy Birthday” to the newborn, because let’s not forget that there was a baby involved in all of this.

Everything You Need To Know About David Letterman’s Final Show

America will bid farewell to the king of late night when his last show airs Wednesday night

Since 1982, millions of Americans have spent the waning hours of their weeknights with David Letterman. Wednesday night, after more than a decade hosting Late Night with David Letterman and more than two decades hosting Late Show with David Letterman, the comedian will host his final episode of late-night TV.

Here’s everything viewers need to know before tuning into CBS for Letterman’s last hurrah:

The who, when and where: Late Show with David Letterman airs at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday on CBS, and will be filmed, as ever, at New York City’s Ed Sullivan Theater. Letterman’s musical guest will be the Foo Fighters, who have enjoyed a long relationship with the late-night host, including performing after his return from open-heart surgery in 2000. CBS has remained mum on other guests and segments, telling viewers only that they can expect many surprises. On Wednesday afternoon, Variety reported that Steve Martin, Jim Carrey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tina Fey and Barbara Walters were seen entering the Ed Sullivan Theater, and that Chris Rock and Peyton Manning would be on hand for the final taping.

And the why: When Letterman announced his plan to retire, back in 2014, he rattled off a list of statistics that spoke to the tremendous amount of time he’d spent behind that desk. “When this show stops being fun,” he explained, “I will retire 10 years later.” He also offered an anecdote about fishing with his young son that suggested that more time with family would be a welcome change after decades of churning out the show night after night.

Who else is out of a job: Paul Shaffer has been Letterman’s band leader, musical director and sidekick since 1982, when Late Night first aired. Shaffer, 65, told Billboard that following the end of Late Show, he plans to play piano more in the studio. He also hopes “to do more comedy, more acting, maybe a three-episode arc on Law & Order.”

Who’s taking over: Stephen Colbert will shed the fictionalized right-wing character he played for ten years on The Colbert Report to take over hosting duties on Late Show, which will be renamed Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The show will resume with Colbert at the helm on Sept. 8, 2015.

The legacy: Letterman is widely recognized by peers and admirers in the comedy world as a true pioneer of late-night television. The absurd ideas he brought to TV—from putting a camera on a monkey to throwing a watermelon from a rooftop—might seem simple to today’s viewers but were revolutionary for their time. Letterman’s discomfort with show business, his willingness to make his guests uncomfortable and his originality made him an idol to many of today’s late-night stars, from Jimmy Kimmel to Jimmy Fallon.

Watch This Store Clerk’s Hilarious Play-by-Play of a Robbery

"Here you go, you forgot this one sir"

When this store clerk in Utah was held at gunpoint, she remained calm and cooperated with the robber. But after he left the store — and was arrested a few minutes later — she managed to have a little fun with what we imagine was a traumatic experience. She went back over the security footage of the whole ordeal and gave it an extremely sarcastic play-by-play.

“I tried to keep him around as long as possible while pressing the emergency button,” the clerk explains on YouTube. You’ll see that she manages to stall him for several minutes, but not in time for the police to arrive. After he left the store, she called the police who found him a few minutes later at a carwash.

Props to this woman for managing to squeeze some humor out of a scary situation.

This Is Michelle Obama’s Workout Routine

Get a closer look at the First Lady's fitness regimen

Michelle Obama released a video of her workout routine to inspire Americans to exercise regularly as part of the #GimmeFive challenge, which celebrates the fifth anniversary of the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” campaign to raise awareness about healthy living in the United States. The video is a response to a good-natured challenge posted by her husband, President Obama, on Twitter last week. It’s also reminiscent of an Instagram video that her friend Beyoncé released of her own exercise regimen.

In the video, you will see Obama lifting weights, jump-roping and boxing, but it looks like dancing is not part of her regular routine.

In the Trailer for Amy, Amy Winehouse Is ‘Just a Girl That Sings’

“It’s a bit upsetting at the end, isn’t it?”

Audiences at the Cannes Film Festival this week are buzzing about the emotional impact of Asif Kapadia’s documentary Amy, which explores the life of the late singer Amy Winehouse, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at 27. The documentary uses archival footage and interviews to mine the complicated inner life of a person who wanted neither fame nor notoriety but only to make music.

The trailer depicts Winehouse as a bright, genuine and supremely gifted performer who shied away from the publicity her talent afforded her. Though Oscar season is still months away, some critics have already opined that Amy will be one to beat in the documentary category. The film hits theaters Jul. 3.

Watch Seth Meyers Redo Letterman’s Late Night Opening

"And now a man who knows that it's Letterman's show and he's just borrowing it: Seth Meyers"

Seth Meyers is currently the steward of NBC’s Late Night franchise, making him inexorably tied to the legacy of David Letterman, who hosted the show at its inception and is now concluding his late night tenure over at CBS.

So, as Meyers’ nod to the outgoing Late Show host, Late Night‘s opening credits Tuesday night were re-imagined in the style of, well, Late Night‘s opening credits—from 1982.

So what changed over the years in New York City? According to Meyers, there are now “so many fewer pornography theaters.”

Letterman’s final show airs Wednesday night.

Watch Jimmy Kimmel Encourage His Viewers to Watch Letterman

"Dave is the best and you should see him"

As part of a tearful homage to David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel urged his viewers to watch Letterman’s last show instead of tuning in to ABC.

“Tomorrow night is Letterman’s farewell show and I would like it if you would watch that instead of our show,” he said. “We will have a show on tomorrow night, it’s going to be a rerun. Please do not watch it, especially if you’re a young person who doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about. Dave is the best and you should see him.”

Kimmel is not shy about his admiration for Letterman. He wrote in a piece for TIME: “For me, Late Night With David Letterman wasn’t just a show. It was a problem.”

Kimmel also turned the segment over to his bandleader Cleto, who talked about Letterman’s bandleader Paul Shaffer in what Kimmel called a “bona fide act of love.”

These 4 Clouded Leopard Cubs Weigh Less Than a Box of Cereal

The tiny quadruplets were born last week

The Port Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, Wash., has posted a video of zookeepers feeding four clouded leopard quadruplets that were born last week to mother Chai Li and father Nah Fun.

The cubs, which are not on view to the public yet, spend most of their time eating, with two-hour meal times taking place every three hours. The largest weighs about as much as a box of Corn Flakes, the zoo said in a statement.

Native to Southeast Asia, clouded leopards are endangered. They’re only bred by about two dozen accredited zoos in North America, so Chai Li giving birth to a litter of four cubs is a rare event, zoo curator Karen Goodrowe Beck said in a statement.
