Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD update

Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD presented Ubisoft with an opportunity to fix the mistakes that dragged down the original PS Vita version of the game — to wring out more of the promise that existed in an often broken and frustrating experience. But for the second time, Liberation fails to deliver. Ubisoft has improved Liberation's looks in the transition from the PS Vita to the Xbox 360, but they only took those improvements so far. Liberation HD is still full of blurry textures and goofy-looking animation, failing to match or approach Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag or even Assassin's Creed 3. Surprisingly, Liberation HD suffers from the same texture pop-in problems that plagued the PS Vita release. Buildings, people, docks — even the ground — are sometimes invisible until a few...

When asked about his plans following his win, Haazen mentioned PC and mobile releases. "I am working on a full version for PC right now," Haazen said. "A lot of people have suggested making a port for iOS [and] Android. But I will make the PC version first, and when that is done I'll look into the possibilities for a port." Tomb Raider reboot became profitable last year

Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics' reboot of the Lara Croft franchise, became profitable in 2013, executive producer Scot Amos told Eurogamer. "By the end of last year, Tomb Raider [was] in the black," Amos said. "We've crossed the line of profitability for the last-gen and PC versions." The action game was released in March 2013 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC. Later that same month, publisher Square Enix revealed that Tomb Raider — along with other games like Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs — had sold more than a million units but fell short of the company's sales expectations. By August 2013, after a disappointing financial year for Square Enix, CEO Phil Rogers took to the company blog to "categorically say that we're not abandoning core, [AAA] console and PC...

EverQuest Next Landmark claims system detailed

In EverQuest Next Landmark, players will be able to determine who can build and use what on their claims, but will have to adhere to a maintenance system in order to keep them, according to a recent livestream from the Sony Online Entertainment development team. These structures can be usable things, like a crafting forge, and claim owners can also choose whether to give others permission to use them. According to the stream, there will be different levels of...

How players teach designers about their own procedurally generated games

Video games are much like animated films; every item in every environment is created. You design every room and every character or item in that room. It’s an act of creation that’s driven by the will of the artists working on the game, and it’s such a deliberate process that it can be rare for the game’s final form to surprise those who worked on it. "Now, a game like Nuclear Throne is different," Vlambeer’s Rami Ismail told Polygon. "You don't craft the work itself, essentially you're creating something that crafts for you." This is the fun of games that feature procedurally generated levels or multiple overlapping systems: these games don’t just surprise the players, they surprise the people who create the games themselves. Interaction as instruction The key to designing...

How communities formed around, helped and spread DayZ

Communities of players helped DayZ achieve its success, and creator Dean Hall traced the community's evolution alongside the game in a recent interview with Gamasutra. "I remember when it first released," Hall said, "the strongest core was actually on 4chan, and you could argue that it was actually 4chan which really promoted and pushed DayZ into the world."It then spread out among different forums, with Reddit being one of the last areas to really pick it up. Since then, Reddit has become a very big part of theDayZ community for some." Beyond internet chatter about the zombie-infested game, other users have spread word about DayZ through different means, Hall said. And that phenomenon allows individuals to gain a certain amount of fame from playing games. "I believe that the YouTube...
