Meet the people who keep some of your favorite games running

In many ways, 2013 was the year of the spectacular network outage. The inability to keep gamers connected online hampered everything from the launch of major video games like SimCity, GTA Online and Battlefield 4, to console services like the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live and, just this week, Nintendo's online network. Server issues were even among the problems that thwarted a successful rollout of HealthCare.gov. As Electronic Arts' recently promoted CEO, Andrew Wilson, told Polygon in a November interview, all of mankind is transitioning to a digital world, and that transition brings with it some major issues. "As all of mankind right now transitions to a digital-type world and a digital-type experience, and you think about the scale and the load that comes from all of mankind...

Nintendo reminds consumers that the Wii U is a new system

Nintendo's latest advertisement for the Wii U attempts to clarify with consumers that the console is an entirely new system and not just a peripheral upgrade for the Wii, as well as highlighting the system's features and new game releases. The advertisement describes the Wii U console as "an entirely new technology and true successor to Wii." The two minute video also outlines the Wii U's features and "exclusive library of games" such as Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, Wii Sports Club and more. Earlier in the year, Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata acknowledged that slow sales of Wii U units were partially due to people's misconception that the console is simply a peripheral upgrade for the Wii. He also said that Nintendo has been unable to...

Cranky Kong tackles new heights in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Donkey Kong's oldest buddy in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Cranky Kong, will give players the power to pogo over danger, as demonstrated by a recent hands-on event in San Francisco. Cranky Kong was revealed as the game's latest playable character — joining Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong — during VGX 2013. In Tropical Freeze's single-player mode, players will always take control of the game's titular ape, Donkey Kong. DK is far from on his own, however; buddies ride along on his back and offer special attacks and abilities. In the case of Cranky, that includes the ability to defy gravity and bounce over otherwise deadly spikes with a pogo stick. Like Diddy and Dixie, Cranky can also take out enemies with a long-ranged attack. Unlike Diddy's pop-gun or Dixie's bubblegum attacks,...

How Rayman Legends' underwater stealth world came together

Rayman Legends developer Ubisoft Montpellier had a challenging task in creating the underwater universe of the platformer's "20,000 Lums Under the Sea" world, and its designer went through the process on the UbiBlog today. The studio had to ensure that the world was very different from the water world of Rayman Legends' predecessor, 2011's Rayman Origins. The first game's water sequence was bright and colorful; in contrast, the one in Legends is ominous and foreboding. Going along with the dark theme, the developers decided to excise visible lums (the Rayman games' happy-go-lucky collectibles). Ubisoft Montpellier also tweaked the standard underwater-level formula by setting 20,000 Lums in a massive underwater dome, which allowed the studio to build swimming sections as well as...
