Titanfall maximum player count set at 6v6

Multiplayer matches of Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall will be capped at 12 players, Respawn founder Vince Zampella confirmed via twitter, outlining that the six human players on each team will be joined by AI support. "6v6 is max player count. Turned out to be the best balance with AI for us," he wrote, responding to a fan's question about the game's player count. "That's humans only count. There are lots of AI, everyone can have a Titan in follow or guard mode too." Recent playable demos of the game featured six players a side but the final figure was not officially confirmed. The gameplay showcased during E3 consisted of seven players on a team, with producer Drew McCoy telling Polygon at the time that player count wasn't finalized. "It's not a technical question for us —...

Dolby has your ears, and now it wants your eyes for Dolby Vision

Dolby Laboratories is famous for its forays into audio technologies like noise reduction and surround sound, and now it wants to help your eyes, too. Announced today, Dolby Vision is designed bring "true-to-life brightness, colors, and contrast" to video signals encompassing broadcast, gaming and streaming content — including services found on modern gaming consoles. According to Dolby, current "color-grading standards are based on the limitations of old technologies." Dolby Vision will allow televisions with the technology to display a wider range of brightness, color and contrast. "Our scientists and engineers said, 'Okay, what if we don't have the shackles of technology that's not going to be here [in the future],'" Dolby's executive director of technology strategy Pat Griffis...

2K Sports pulls MLB 2K games offline, not renewing series for 2014 (update)

MLB 2K publisher Take-Two Interactive seems to have erased the now-defunct simulation baseball franchise from the internet, reports Pasta Padre. The Major League Baseball 2K series began in 2004 with ESPN Major League Baseball 2K4; it originated in Sega's World Series Baseball franchise, which debuted in 1994. Take-Two published the MLB 2K series under the 2K Sports label, and gave no indications after the release of Major League Baseball 2K12 in March 2012 that it was planning to release another MLB 2K title. Last January saw the surprise announcement from Take-Two of Major League Baseball 2K13 (screenshot above). It was released in March 2013 and widely criticized as being essentially the same game as its predecessor, except with updated rosters. All mentions of MLB 2K titles —...

Plastic Piranha's Rekoil will be released Jan. 28 on Windows PC via Steam, and it will be available Jan. 29 on the Xbox Games Store as Rekoil: Liberator (screenshot above), publisher 505 Games confirmed to Polygon today. According to 505 Games, Rekoil and Rekoil: Liberator will each cost $14.99, although Steam pre-order customers get a 30 percent discount to $10.49. Both Rekoil and Rekoil: Liberator will offer class-based first-person shooting with 40 weapons across seven modes on 10 maps. A 505 Games rep told Polygon that the XBLA version "is different in that it does not support mod tools and/or eSports the way the PC version...

Battlefield 4 spotlights EA's inability to launch games, treat players with dignity

We can earn more money, we can buy more games, we can forget about the bad experiences playing certain titles, but time is irreplaceable. Once spent, it can never be returned. If nothing else, Battlefield 4 has wasted the time of many, many players. The game was released on October 29 in North America and it still doesn’t work. Certain issues on certain platforms have gotten better, but we're now a few days into 2014 and events are still being postponed. Issues are still being reported. My Twitter feed is littered with reports of players being booted from online games or their progress in the single-player campaign being deleted. There is a class-action lawsuit alleging that EA oversold the strength of Battlefield 4, allowing the company's stock to rise and "senior executives to...

Looking back: Watch Dogs: Invasion

Michael Chertoff, former secretary of homeland security, told the Associated Press in 2010, "I don't think there is another city in the U.S. that has as an extensive and integrated camera network as Chicago has.” He should know — he spent nearly $8 million on it. Or rather, the Department of Homeland Security did. Polygon has found estimates that suggest as many as 24,000 public and private cameras are now connected to the OEMC Operations Center at 1411 West Madison on Chicago's Near West Side, the same facility bought and paid for by Homeland Security in 2007. If there is a real ctOS in Chicago, then it lives in the "OC." If all these cameras were to record 1080p high-definition digital video for just one day, at 30 frames per second, they would capture more than 2.9 petabytes...

Titanfall won't launch with modding tools

Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall will not feature modding or mapping tools at launch, Respawn founder Vince Zampella revealed recently, saying that the availability of the features will be evaluated post-launch. "Not at launch for sure, will have to evaluate after launch," he wrote, responding to a fan's question via Twitter whether mod or mapping tools will be available when the game is released. Earlier this week, a Respawn representative confirmed that Titanfall will feature sniping but will be "a pretty different animal than you'll find in your run of the mill modern military shooter." The developer also revealed that Titanfall sniping won't allow for the effectiveness of quickscoping and no-scoping techniques. For more about the title, check out the recently announced Titan...

Halo: Spartan Assault review: tin soldiers

Halo: Spartan Assault is the extreme opposite of the careful image Microsoft has spent over 10 years crafting for its biggest franchise. Whether under original developer Bungie, new blood 343 Industries or even brief side projects from the likes of Ensemble Studios, the Halo name has always held a promise of beautiful alien worlds to explore, serious sci-fi storytelling and nail-biting, fast-paced combat. Spartan Assault doesn't follow through on any of this. Originally released as a mobile game for Windows 8 phones, Spartan Assault's failure to live up to its namesake is especially clear in the transition to Xbox One. It's next-gen in name only but a disappointing waste of the Halo name regardless of what platform it's on. Halo: Spartan Assault follows the exploits of Spartans...

Why a realistic Los Santos in GTA 5 would be unconvincing

The setting of Grand Theft Auto 5, Los Santos, feels real and convincing to players largely because it is far from real, according to Rockstar North art director Aaron Garbut in an interview with Edge. The sprawling Los Santos that Rockstar North created in GTA 5 bears a strong resemblance to the city of Los Angeles. Garbut says the developers stopped short of rebuilding Los Angeles in the game because real cities don't necessarily translate well in video games. "I'd never want to rebuild a city," Garbut told Edge. "I think that would be a lot less satisfying both for us to build and for the player to play. In a lot of ways, it would be less convincing, too. At least that's how I rationalise it to myself. "Only a relatively small subset of players ever get to know the real L.A. or...

The 50 gaming newsmakers who shaped 2013

Festooned with the launches of two major consoles from Sony and Microsoft, 2013 was always going to be a memorable year for gaming. But it wasn't just the machinations of massive corporations that shaped the last 12 months. Much of the news last year was drafted on social media, around creative individuals who have managed to make wondrous things that have become popular by force of public will, rather than via marketing might. Change has also been wrought by diversity movements that have found a way to forcefully express themselves and so garner wide support for important issues, previously dismissed wrongly or maliciously by those wielding power over communication channels, as niche. As in all years, there were also unique examples of triumphant creation and exertion as well as of...

World of Tanks interactive video asks you to help a tank find Christmas

A new "TankQuest" interactive video from World of Tanks maker Wargaming tasks the player with directing one of two tanks to a Christmas tree. The two tanks seem perfectly friendly before they see a column of tanks with Christmas presents, and are informed that only one present remains at the tree ahead. That sets off a race, with the tanks having to choose their routes in order to beat their companion to that final present. Depending on which tank the viewer chooses, certain routes may be open or impassable. An earlier installment of TankQuest saw a tank trying to come to his allies' assistance before they wound up destroyed in an ambush.

Devil's Third, the third-person action title from designer Tomonobu Itagaki and Valhalla Game Studios, is "about 80 percent complete" and will be released in 2014, said Itagaki in an interview with 4Gamer. "Next year will be the year we'll be releasing the console game Devil's Third," said Itagaki, as reported by Siliconera. "At the moment, it is about 80 percent complete, and we can about see the end of it." According to Itagaki, Valhalla still has some polishing work to do on the game. He continued, "For you fans out there, I'd like to apologize for making you worry. We'll be going all out next year, so please look forward to it." Itagaki resigned from his longtime position as the head of Team Ninja at Tecmo in July 2008, and announced in March 2010 that he had joined Valhalla Game...
