Bottom line: Kindle Fire HD 7'' is excellent, but 8.9'' is poor.
The dictionary and X ray features in the ebook reader are very useful.
The weight is on the heavier side, but the build quality is solid.
A charger as part of the accessory would be welcome. Only an USB cable is supplied.
Apps are good, but are comparatively limited in number. But then apps is not the primary reason for which one would buy a Kindle.
Its an amazing companion. For reading, apps, gaming and entertainment. Five Stars without any doubt.
So you cant share apps on your kindle device and android phone. You will have to buy it twice to use it on both the devices.
eBooks you bought from other sources dont show up as kindle ebooks but as pdfs so you need to use it without the kindle features. Hence I have returned the kindle although i really like the device.
Pros:
1) Awesome display. HD videos look absolutely gorgeous on this device. The display quality is at par, if not better, than most of the much more expensive Tablets out there. I compared the display with iPad mini (w/o retina Display) of one of my friends; it looked better to me.
2) Good finish: feels really comfortable holding it, even with 1 hand, in landscape mode.
3) Battery life is good. Works for approx. 2 days for me, with 4-5 hours of YouTube & browsing, with Wi-Fi on throughout.
4) Sound quality is mind-blowing.
5) Reasonably priced: An almost perfect device considering it's price.
Cons:
1) Lack of full Android Support (including Google Play Store) for "out-of-the-box" device: The Amazon OS (which is a customized version of Android) looks really promising & wonderfully fast. However, forcing one to Kindlestore (and blocking Google Play Store) is a strict NO for many people, more so as Google "essential" apps like Gmail, YouTube & Maps etc are not free on Kindle Store. The learning curve for this device might be pretty rough, in the beginning atleast, for even techies. However, once you get a hang of it, it's really amazing and, atleast for me, better than native Android experience.
PS: Lack of Google Play Store for "out-of-the-box" device doesn't mean one can't install such apps for free on this device. Though it does require tweaking & playing with the device's software a bit. For eg, consider this link: [...]
though I am not sure how comfortable one might be, playing with APKs and all. If you think you can handle such tweaks etc, I would definitely recommend to go for this device.
Just one thing that I don't like is the amazone app store.
Google play was much better.
The app store also yet not customized according to Indian consumers. Specially felt this in Books section.
There is no messenger app !!! I mean.. hello!! Text plus can not be used here in India...
At least give one.. anyone of the popular messenger app that can be used here.
And that silk browser is not that silky.. lol
Give a option to exit it or close it.
Will edit review after more time of uses. For now its just one month. So can't comment more.
Oh yes the screen freezes once.. But it was no big issue.. Just restart it and everything is fine..
BUY IT and ENJOY IT.
and Request amazone to customize app store for Indians :) :P
