NBA 2K14 players still suffering some connectivity issues

NBA 2K14 connectivity issues that cropped up last week have mostly subsided, although some players are still having problems with certain networked modes in the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game. The trouble appeared to begin Dec. 26, when 2K Games customer support representatives said on Twitter that NBA 2K14 developer Visual Concepts was aware of, and investigating, reports of connectivity issues. Problems persisted over the next two days, including periods during which the servers were down entirely. According to 2K Sports community manager Ronnie Singh, the developers have pushed at least two server-side updates in an effort to fix the problems, one on the night of Dec. 27 and one shortly before 2 a.m. ET today. The most recent update seems to have resolved most of...

Battlefield 4 players experiencing 'intermittent connectivity issues'

Battlefield 4 players on a number of platforms are currently suffering "intermittent connectivity problems," and developer EA DICE is aware of the problem, according to a banner atop the game's forums on Battlelog. "We are continuing to monitor some intermittent connectivity issues affecting some players across various platforms. Thank you for your patience. We will update this with further information as available," the update reads. It's unclear how widespread this problem is, but the connectivity issues are separate from the numerous problems with various versions of Battlefield 4 itself, as detailed in DICE's top issues tracker. The studio is currently investigating outstanding problems such as a "bug accounting for a large amount of crashes on [Xbox 360]," a "desynchronized...

Some players from the first wave, which took place earlier this month, are automatically invited into the second wave. The other way to get in is to pay for it by purchasing one of four limited-edition collector's packs of tanks that are available on Gaijin's store. The packs, which give players access to the M4A2 and/or T-34 tanks, cost between $49.99 and $99.99. Those who don't want to pay will have to wait for the open beta, which will be available in 2014; the aforementioned packs, which offer exclusive content, won't be available once the open beta begins. Meet the people who keep some of your favorite games running

The inability to keep gamers connected online hampered everything from the launch of major video games like SimCity, GTA Online and Battlefield 4, to console services like the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live and, just this week, Nintendo's online network. Server issues were even among the problems that thwarted a successful rollout of HealthCare.gov. As Electronic Arts' recently promoted CEO, Andrew Wilson, told Polygon in a November interview, all of mankind is transitioning to a digital world, and that transition brings with it some major issues. "As all of mankind right now transitions to a digital-type world and a digital-type experience, and you think about the scale and the load that comes from all of mankind transitioning and getting access to information through digital...

There's no right way to write a best-of list

You know them even if you've never actually read them. They're the tacit terms-of-service contracts we blindly agree to the first time we speak in superlatives. The first rule is not to write the rules, so I will begin by breaking that one. I plan on ignoring them all anyway. Now, I'm speaking about games here, but the given medium can be interchanged with anything, really: movies, music, installation art, salt shakers, gaping head wounds. With that, I humbly present the rules of annual best-of list making: The video games on your list must have been released for the first time within the calendar year The video games on your list must be finished products, preferably cast in carbon or another element with a comparably long half-life The video games on your list must be true video...

In an "include as intended" design strategy, the game's system randomly generates items and the environment at random, including treasure chests, traps, ladders and height differences. Players' characters will be able to relive and explore the memories trapped in various in-game structures such as monuments and artefacts by "reading" them. As well as being equipped with weapons, players can also attack enemies from afar using elemental attack items, such as an explosive...

Destiny originally featured a third-person only viewpoint

Bungie's upcoming sci-fi space epic Destiny began its life not as a first-person shooter, but a third-person only game, technical art director Ryan Ellis recently told Game Informer. Ellis has been part of the development team, which began with only four staff members, since the game's beginning. According to Ellis, Bungie has "maintained the core" of what Destiny is, but still changed much of its original design. "We actually at one point were third-person only," Ellis said. "There [are] some third-person elements in the game still. That's important for gameplay, but also to show off your cool moves and show off the cool armor that you get. "We wanted to make a kick-ass action game, and we decided first-person was the right place to do that." Ellis also talks about the game's...

Bungie holiday video is a festive Destiny poem

A holiday video from Bungie takes the form of a poem read by a fireplace on a presumably wintry night. The poem, read by Bungie community manager David "DeeJ" Dague, spoofs Clement Clarke Moore's famous "A Visit from St. Nicholas," more popularly known by its first line: "'Twas the night before Christmas." In the Bungie version, however, 'twas the year before Destiny with hard-working developers as busy as Santa's elves getting the game ready for players. Destiny launches next September.

Dying Light holiday video proves zombies and caroling don't mix

A Dying Light-themed holiday video from developer Techland is likely the most unsettling version of a Christmas carol you'll hear all season. The short video features a little girl's voice quietly singing iconic carol "Silent Night" to herself as the camera pans around the room in which she, presumably, is taking refuge from the undead hordes. However, it quickly becomes apparent that she isn't the only one around on this particular silent night. Dying Light is scheduled to hit in 2014.

Creative director Greg Kasavin explained that the studio spent 2013 revealing and showing Transistor, which is headed to PlayStation 4 in 2014. Having an alpha version by the end of the year lines up with the developers' expectations. "Right now Transistor is in an alpha state where just about all of the content, systems, and features we have in mind are implemented in some fashion, and the game is playable from beginning to end," Kasavin wrote. "It's where we wanted to be as we head into 2014. "In the coming weeks, we plan to keep testing, tuning, and iterating on every aspect of the game until we think it's ready to put out there for you to...
