Company of Heroes Online goes offline
1:48 PST | | Print NewsRelic's free-to-play Company of Heroes Online will soon be going offline -- for good. As per this announcement, the game will be shutting down at the end of March. Here is the announcement:On behalf of the entire Company of Heroes team, we want to thank everyone for participating in the Company of Heroes Online Open Beta program. After an exciting period of operating and testing, we will be closing Open Beta on March 31, 2011 to evaluate the next steps for the Company of Heroes series. As of today, you can no longer purchase COHO Cash from the website, but you will be able to spend any purchased COHO Cash in the game until March 31, 2011. We will also honor any COHO Cash Card redemptions on the website until March 1, 2011. For additional information regarding COHO Open Beta, visit the FAQ section. What does this mean for the Company of Heroes franchise? Well, Relic says the following:"We are still working on our plans for the Company of Heroes franchise and are not ready to discuss details yet. We will be leveraging all the data and feedback the Company of Heroes Online Beta generated." If you haven't played Company of Heroes, now is the time to head over to the CoHO website and give it a try before it closes for good. Or, you know, purchase the retail Company of Heroes games.

Operation Dynamo goes live

This new patch for Company of Heroes Online adds quite a bit, including Facebook support, guilds, matchmaking improvements, all in addition to the balance changes. You can read more about it here. Here is a snippet from the update:Skill Mismatch Bonus The underdogs in mismatched reward games will be rewarded with bonus Supply and Experience at the end of the game, regardless of winning or losing. The bonus percentage and a mismatch meter are displayed on the loading screen.
Balance Changes lots of balance changes have been made, including two re-designs of Commander Abilities. Both Reactive Artillery for the Wehrmacht and Air-Dropped Supplies for Americans have had major work done, and Improvement Points will be refunded to players whove invested in these abilities. The changes are pretty impressive, so be sure to check them out.

Company of Heroes Online goes open beta

If persistant multiplayer isn't your thing, the beta also comes with the original Company of Heroes campaign, which is a pretty good deal for free.The Company of Heroes Online Open Beta features two different armies, the Allies and Axis, each with three different divisions offering players a choice of play style. The Open Beta features 17 different multiplayer maps, which will be split between 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 modes. Players of the Company of Heroes Online Open Beta will also be able to enjoy the single player campaign from Company of Heroes for free. Players can download and play the Open Beta now by going to www.companyofheroes.com. It has been a while since any major Company of Heroes activity, but we're dusting off the cobwebs and ramping up our CoHO coverage.

COHO goes into closed beta
1:21 PST | | Print NewsTHQ has announced that free to play title Company of Heroes Online has entered a closer beta for members who opted in at the companyofheroes.com website, and will be including up to 20k testers come next week. Here is the announcement:The Company of Heroes Online Beta will feature two different armies, the Allies and Axis each with three different divisions offering players a choice of play style. The beta will feature 17 different multiplayer maps, which will be split between 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 modes. Players of the Company of Heroes Online Beta will also be able to enjoy the single player campaign from Company of Heroes for free.
On July 21st a few lucky Company of Heroes community members will receive keys in their inbox giving them access to the testing phase of the closed beta. Following this, on the 26th July, the closed beta will officially launch with 20,000 keys up for grabs on IGN Entertainments FilePlanet.com. FilePlanet is the premier online destination for PC gamers to find the files they need, whether its the latest hot demo, patches for their current favorite game, access to exclusive Betas or downloadable content to expand and extend their adventures. This promotion will run until the 30th of July. If you don't want to wait until the 26th to try the game, you can always try to get a key by following these instructions.

Kotaku previews CoHO
8:33 PST | | Print News | Category: Game NewsThe folks at Kotaku have published a preview about Company of Heroes Online from a recent press event. There isn't much new information since we've known about CoHO for quite a while, but still, a preview is a preview. A snippet:The matchmaking, I was told, first looks for players of similar levels, and then it expands its search looking again for players a little further apart in experience. The system keeps doing this until it finds a match. In my case, since I was playing the highest level character possible in a Korean open beta, the matchmaking took a bit longer, but it was still less than five minutes. Of course, if anyone wanted to preview it themselves, they could just play the Chinese version. However, the article does include some video and screenshots.
CoHO gets new official site
8:18 PST | | Print NewsNow that Company of Heroes Online has been confirmed for North America, the folks at Relic and THQ have launched a brand new site focusing on the upcoming free-to-play game. The site doesn't have much content about CoHO on the moment, other than a FAQ about the game. Here is a snippet from that FAQ:What kinds of upgrades can you get?
The game features a large number of upgrades and special units. You can obtain upgrades to increase speed, improve accuracy, decrease resource costs, and increase health of your units to name a few. Players are limited on how many they can bring in a match. You can also recruit Hero units which have special abilities not available to standard units. Heroes level up from match to match as well, adding persistence to units between matches. Both of these items can be unlocked by playing the game or can be purchased from the store.
The scary thing is that all non-CoHO information has been wiped from the site. Vanilla CoH, Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor -- all the information is gone. It looks like the future of Company of Heroes isn't single-player campaigns or standalone retail products but Company of Heroes Online.
Update: The old community site can still be found right here for now, but the main site seems to be gone.

Company of Heroes Online confirmed for North America
23:09 PST | | Print News | Category: Official AnnouncementsWe knew Company of Heroes Online was coming to North America as per our own news story, and now it has been confirmed:Tim Holman, senior producer at Relic, the game's developer, said that, In the past, our multiplayer experience was a quick game session that was over as soon as the match was over. With this game, you get an extended experience over time. Completing an online match nets experience rewards, but also army items and hero units. They can also be bought using the in-game store for real-world money. Relic is promising that this will not imbalance the game, as it will only speed up leveling and not give an unfair advantage to paying customers. So, to confirm, Company of Heroes Online will be coming to North America as a free-to-play title with microtransactions, it'll be a persistent online game where you battle for experience which can be used to purchase items and units, and that the game will contain the single-player CoH experience.
Some fans may not like the idea of Company of Heroes becoming a free-to-play game with microtransactions, heroes, and the ability to purchase armies. However, CoHO is an enjoyable experience and it'll definitely add more shelflife to the franchise.

It looks like THQ has quite a bit of confidence in the title, as their recent job opening makes it very clear that the title is coming to North America:Assist in building an effective organization to successfully launch and operate Company of Heroes Online.
Determine appropriate business models for Company of Heroes Online, looking at pre and post launch operating expenses and potential revenues needed to meet short and long-term profitability targets.
Prepare and monitor competitor analysis.
Ensure live operation of Company of Heroes Online on a 24x7x365 basis.
Deliver a high-quality product and a valuable entertainment experience to our customers
Develop and manage the overall project plan/pipeline for Company of Heroes Online operations in North America.
Work closely with product development to ensure on-schedule launch of Company of Heroes Online.
There hasn't been much (or rather, any) Company of Heroes news of late, so a launch of CoHO would definitely be a great thing.

IGN for Haiti Charity Event

Today, IGN is broadcasting a 12-hour webathon, beginning at 9am PST and ending at 9pm. The people of Haiti need your help. You can donate directly to our chosen charity, Habitat for Humanity, or you can jump to the IGN for Haiti eBay page to bid on some amazing auction items. Some notable items include a Life-Size Replica Bayonetta Gun, signed BioShock 2 Splicer Mask, Half-Life Guitar, and over 250 other kick ass items.
