XCOM: Enemy Unknown will place you in control of a secret paramilitary organization called XCOM. As the XCOM commander, you will defend against a terrifying global alien invasion by managing resources, advancing technologies, and overseeing combat strategies and individual unit tactics.
The original X-COM is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made and has now been re-imagined by the strategy experts at Firaxis Games. XCOM: Enemy Unknown will expand on that legacy with an entirely new invasion story, enemies and technologies to fight aliens and defend Earth. You will control the fate of the human race through researching alien technologies, creating and managing a fully operational base, planning combat missions and controlling soldier movement in battle.
PC gamers have every reason to be suspicious of change. Change has killed beloved studios, franchises, and entire genres. When we get modern versions of old favorites, like when Jagged Alliance was supposed to be Back in Action, we often find mangled versions of better games. So I understand why fans of the original X-COM: UFO Defense are leery of how Firaxis' new XCOM: Enemy Unknown liberally changes and discards elements of its revered predecessor. X-COM wasn't broke, but Firaxis has done an awful lot of fixing. Read More »
Quick! We need five fresh recruits to help in the battle against invading aliens. Mostly because everybody died -- there were Mutons involved, lots of panicking and exploding cars. We don't really want to talk about it. So suit up, team, and enter to win one of our five free Steam copies below! Read More »
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a harsh introduction to the burdens of command, in that all of your soldiers are probably already dead. To help you out with that a little, IGN's XCOM: Enemy Unknown Starter Guide wiki has a ton of good tips for not making everybody dead quite as much. For example, you're probably dashing ahead with most of your guys every turn. This is bad. Dashing should be used sparingly when you're desperate to reach cover, or to position an Assault trooper using Run and Gun to fire his shotgun at an alien flank. Read More »
I consider the 1994 turn-based tactical masterpiece X-COM: UFO Defense to be the single best videogame ever made. Compared directly to that impossibly high standard, Firaxis' 2012 remake, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, does remarkably well. It's a somewhat-simplified version that nevertheless succeeds, particularly on Classic difficulty, in recreating the original's skin-tingling atmosphere, white-knuckle tension, and bottomless tactical depth. Turning the tide against alien invaders with a group of outgunned and outnumbered soldiers who live and die (and many will die) based on how our decisions interact with a virtual roll of the dice creates countless moments of sky-high triumph and staggering defeats. After 18 long years, the release of what might just be a true successor to one of the greatest PC games of all time is upon us. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is getting a lot of attention, both from us and around the web, to say nothing of 2K's aggressive advertising push that attempts to psionically control our minds and make us hand over our piggy banks. Not so fast! We've got high expectations for XCOM ourselves, and Dan's got a white-knuckle grip on his preview copy, but no game is perfect. To counterbalance the tidal wave of hype, GameSpy's Questions & Concerns series is here with a mind-shield of healthy skepticism. Here are three factors that have us wondering if this really will be the second coming of X-COM: UFO Defense. Read More »
