Exclamatory statement with appropriate accompanying punctuation! Popular board game Zombies!!! is finally making its way to PC in a digital form. While it's been out for a little while on Windows phones, the adaptation will be finally coming out for the mouse-and-keyboard set sometime this winter. And it's got a trailer to prove it. Let's see. My supercomputer will go on the east wall, while my secret entrance will probably go on the west. Where will I put all my extra super suits? This lair doesn't have nearly enough closet space. Be prepared for a lot of interior design, as DC Universe Online's newest DLC pack is Home Turf, which gives players their very own housing to store their heroic stuff. Read More »
You've spent enough time with Team Fortress 2 to toss Valve a couple of bucks for the free shooter. And what better way to do that than to snag something during the second annual Manniversary Sale? Things are cheaper than usual, as per the definition of a sale, so you can make yourself feel good about paying for one of the best F2P games on the market without breaking the bank. A win-win, if you ask me. Read More »
This is the internet, and we need more cat things. Fortunately, Team Meat has our back. Wait, do two-headed fluffy monstrosities still count as kitties? Because their new game is Mew-Genics, and it involves, well, cats being genetically altered. Or something. Read More »
One of Guild Wars 2's greatest advantages over any other MMO is that it's easier to quit playing. Which isn't how it's supposed to work. Unlike normal games, MMOs are based on keeping you involved at all costs. There must always be something just beyond your grasp, some reward at your fingertips, some reason to keep playing a little longer. Many games work like this, of course, but MMOs in particular have a financial incentive to work like this. MMOs are based entirely on the premise that you should never, ever stop playing. It's like episodic TV, except that there's no next week. There is only and always now. Guild Wars 2 bucks this trend. It's easier to quit playing because, ironically, it's easier to start playing again. Read More »
Like a runaway mid-lane solo carry who's gone 17-0 versus his sorely outclassed lane enemy before going on to win the game by a landslide, Riot Games' League of Legends has spent the past three years snowballing from a relatively modest-yet-fun MOBA into a worldwide phenomenon. LoL's second competitive season wrapped last weekend at the USC Basketball Arena in Los Angeles, CA, where a packed stadium of 10,000 cheering fans watched the Taipei Assassins steamroll Korean team Azubu Frost in a massive 3-1 upset, with a $1,000,000 cash prize hanging in the balance. But, despite how big that payday is -- and despite the impressive event and turnout -- this whole eSports phenomenon still has a long way to go. Read More »
As a celebration of everything that made the 1980s and '90s gaming scene memorable, Retro City Rampage is an excellent museum exhibit. Its levels are a playable history lesson, from levels inspired by Robotron: 2084 and Tapper to an extensive list of visual tweaks that can make the 8-bit graphics look like it's being played on a GameBoy, DOS, or anything in between. It's certainly a love letter to a past era. However, as a modern game it's not nearly as successful. There's a reason why a lot of the design ideas of yesteryear have gone by the wayside over the past couple of decades: Many of them weren't very good. Read More »
"Sounds like an explosive," remarked a Steam friend when I opened Continent of the Ninth Seal – known commonly as C9 – for the first time. I chuckled. You see, this happened as I looked upon the bird-like limbs and hyper-delicate face of the Witchblade I was crafting in the character creation screen, and at the time I didn't think this adorable little flippy-skirted vixen was capable of anything much more taxing than energetic participation in a Sailor Moon-themed dance routine. It seems the thing du jour these days is free-to-play, which none of us can complain about -- done well, it's a great model that gives us great access to games while allowing us to pay however much we feel it's worth. Surprisingly, next in line for the treatment is indie game Dwarfs!?, which has gone free-to-play today on Steam. Read More »
Halloweenify all the things! Cartoony free-to-play shooter Battlefield Heroes is the next game in line to receive the spooky treatment, with a flood of skeletons and dudes wearing pumpkin hats coming between the Red and Blue teams -- you know, as if their relationship wasn't strained enough already. This new trailer shows us just how the new guys will be affecting gameplay. Read More »
I've done a dozen of these columns now, and in all that time I've neglected one thing, and it's a pretty glaring omission. I'd like to apologize for that right here, right now, and rectify it posthaste. I present to you -- in all their bolstered, embellished, and transformed glory -- the dragons of Skyrim. Bigger, better dragons modded to high heaven and back, and all at zero cost to you. This Skyrimprovement is going to show you how to get the most out of your flying reptiles. Read More »
I heard a piano theme and began to choke up all over again. If you know what I'm talking about, you've probably also played To The Moon. If not, you should totally try it out -- it's currently the centerpiece of Indie Royale's Fall Bundle, which sees the heartbreaking adventure cushioned by a handful of other excellent games for the current price of just over $5. One of my favorite after-school activities as a teenager was to drag my best friend along to watch whatever obscure Asian horror movie we could find showing at the cinema. Though she grumbled, I found the terrible acting and obvious props and special effects to be incredibly hilarious. That's why I'm so excited by this trailer for Sleeping Dogs' Halloween-themed DLC, which channels the 1990s VHS horror movie era exquisitely. Read More »
This is the Hitman I want. The Agent 47 who remains unseen even when he's right under the enemy's nose, the assassin who infiltrates, observes, plans, and cleverly executes... even if that means doing it all in a ridiculous chicken costume. We've heard some concerning feedback about Absolution's smaller, more linear levels, about Agent 47's magical see-through-walls ability, and about a shift to action over stealth. The latest trailer, Introducing Disguises, tempers those concerns, at least temporarily, by highlighting the elements that made Hitman one of the best stealth franchises ever. Read More »
Spoiler alert! If you haven't yet played Mass Effect 3 and you've somehow managed to avoid the cacophony of noise surrounding its ending, stop reading now. I'll give you a moment to turn away from you monitor... Okay, off we go. Commander Shepard already cheated death once. Don't expect him to do it again. BioWare is already laying the foundation for the next chapter in the Mass Effect franchise, and it promises it won't be resurrecting Shepard or even replacing him with another carbon copy space soldier.
