Licensing

The University of Chicago Press licenses content from its journals to a select group of trusted partners, who share our commitment to worldwide dissemination of scholarship and the highest editorial and production standards. Rights may be available for:

• inclusion in databases, abstracting and indexing services, or other products
• inclusion in content management, alerting, and document delivery services
• publication of local, sponsored, abridged, or translated editions
• sales and marketing of English-language or translated reprints
• distribution to scholars in emerging nations (as part of the Chicago Emerging Nations Initiative)

Permissions

Articles from University of Chicago Press journals may be copied or otherwise reused without permission only to the extent permitted by Sections 107 and 108 of the U.S. Copyright Law. Please consult the Guidelines for Fair Use of our Publications.

Permission to copy articles for personal or internal use; for classroom or library reserve use; or for delivery via interlibrary loan or document delivery may be obtained from the Copyright Clearance Center:

Permission must be obtained from the Press for all other reuse of journals content, including:

• copying for general distribution
• advertising or promotional use
• republication or resale

The University of Chicago Press, Journals Division has recently contracted with Copyright Clearance Center to facilitate your rights and permissions needs.  With Copyright Clearance Center’s Rightslink® service it’s faster and easier than ever before to secure permission from UCP’s journal titles to be republished in a journal/magazine, book, CD-ROM/DVD, dissertation/ thesis, training materials, academic coursepack or promotional materials.  Follow the steps below to get started.

1. Send us the above permission request form by e-mail, fax or mail.
2. You will receive an e-mail reply with a link.  Simply click on the link and a screen will pop up with your requested article’s information entered at the top of the screen.
3. Select that way you would like to reuse the content.
4. Create an account if you haven’t already.
5. Accept the terms and conditions and you’re done.

Articles in the public domain may be used without permission, but it is customary to contact the author.
