Our Bombay, amchi Mumbai. Yes, there is no other city like Mumbai. The name �Mumbai� is an eponym derived from the name of Hindu Goddess Mumbadevi (�Mumba�) and �Aai� means mother in Marathi. The Britishers anglicized the name Bombay from Bombaim, the name given to the area Bom Baia meaning �Good Bay� by Portuguese in the 16 th century. It was always known as Mumbai to Marathi and Gujarati people and was it became the official name in 1995.
Mumbai is the capital city of state of Maharashtra and the most populous city of India. Situated on the west coast of the state, it forms the worlds' fifth most densely populous metropolitan area along with its neighbouring suburbs. Since it lies on the coast, this metropolitan city has a deep natural harbour that takes care of more than half of country's traveling passengers traffic and handles a considerable amount of cargo.
Besides being the important port of India, it is the entertainment and commercial capital as well. It is the habitat of some of the important financial institutions in India like the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and houses the corporate headquarters of several Indian companies .
The city is also famous for crowded streets and it's local train service. Its local roadside fast food treats are popular in many other cities of India like vada pav, panipuri, bhelpuri and pav bhaji.
