Among the reasons Sun Microsystems has been out of favor with Wall Street for years is the company's inability to fully profit from its clever inventions, notably those in software. With the company now pursuing another turnaround, the nub of Sun's software game plan can be boiled down to two words: open source.
Developer interest in OpenSolaris in Asia is brewing, but it remains to be seen if that has translated into services revenues for its creator, Sun Microsystems.
Sun Microsystems will release sample code next month giving Solaris 10 its first injection of virtualization on Intel and AMD hardware, finally expected in 2007.
Erast writes "NexentaOS GNU/OpenSolaris is built on top of solid Debian/Ubuntu ground and enterprise level OpenSolaris core. Before Alpha 5 was released the only option to upgrade OpenSolaris core bits were to backup user's data and re-install new ISO. But not anymore. Alpha 5 brings ability to perform OpenSolaris core live upgrade and significantly reduces the downtime associated with an operating system upgrade or maintenance."
Sun Microsystems is touting the growth of its one-year-old open source Latest News about open source project OpenSolaris, indicating the open code effort for its formerly closed Solaris operating system TechNet Security Center: Tools & Guidance to Defend Your Network has drawn thousands of developers, hundreds of contributions, and millions in revenue.
